“Enter to Learn, Go Forth and Serve, building a better tomorrow, for ourselves and our community” is Carusi Middle School’s motto. These are words that the faculty and support staff of Carusi pledge each day to the parents, students, fellow staff members, and each other. The students, the heart of our school, also promote a pledge in which they “Enter to Learn” to become Caring, Academic, Responsible, Unparalleled Students with Integrity (CARUSI). These CARUSI Core Values, in conjunction with our Community of Caring initiative which promotes Caring, Respect, Responsibility, Trust and Family, help frame our character education program. The Carusi community believes in commitment to young adolescents, high expectations for all, advocacy for every student, partnerships between school and community, a positive school climate, and a unified vision and mission. Carusi also pledges to all, its vision statement, “an integrated curriculum that is challenging, with varied teaching and learning approaches, providing assessments and evaluations that promote learning, along with a flexible environment to meet the diverse needs of our students, programs and policies that foster emotional, social and academic success for all.”
The Character Education Initiative, promoting character education in our school district and community, is a collaborative effort between the Cherry Hill Teachers Education Association and the Cherry Hill Zone PTA, with the support of Cherry Hill School District Administration. Our professional development initiatives have been based on the research of Wormeli, Tomlinson, Marzano, and DuFour. Throughout the years Carusi has gone through many changes in staff, as well as leadership, yet consistently retains its reputation of openly welcoming new students and families to our school community. Despite the many changes, Carusi Middle School has always remained a warm and inviting community school because of our consistent belief in and dedicated work with our CARUSI Core Values. Our school continues to be a nurturing and supportive environment, striving to educate the “whole” child, as reflected in our mission statement. In order for these character education goals to be achieved, students must intrinsically subscribe, support and believe in the values of good character. Our daily dedicated advisory program is an exemplary model of Carusi’s character education. Advisory provides both teachers and students a stronger connection and insight into their community and each other.
